Long Island (pronounced /ˈlɔːŋ ˈaɪlənd/) is a densely populated island in the southeast part of the U.S. state of New York, in the northeastern United States.
Etymology
The name "Long Island" is derived from the island's elongated shape. It was named by the indigenous people who originally inhabited the area, and the name was later adopted by European settlers.
