Missouri (mɪˈzʊəri)

Missouri is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. The name "Missouri" is derived from the Siouan language tribe's word for "wooden canoe people" or "he of the big canoe."

Etymology

The name "Missouri" has several different interpretations. It is named after the Missouri River, which in turn was named after the Missouri Indians. The word "Missouri" often has been construed to mean "muddy water" but the Siouan languages are not so easily translated. The state of Missouri was named after the tribe of Sioux Indians of the state called the Missouris. The word "Missouri" means "wooden canoe people" or "he of the big canoe."

Pronunciation

The pronunciation of the state's name is somewhat controversial, with most people pronouncing it as mɪˈzʊəri, but some (especially from the southern part of the state) pronounce it as mɪˈzʊərə.
