Iowa (eye-oh-wuh)
Iowa (pronounced /ˈaɪəwə/) is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States, an area often referred to as the "American Heartland". It derives its name from the Ioway people, one of the many Native American tribes that occupied the state at the time of European exploration.
Etymology
The name "Iowa" comes from the Ioway people, a Siouan tribe of Native Americans that lived in Iowa before European settlers arrived. The word "Ioway" is an anglicized version of "Ayuxwa" - which in the Ioway language means "one who puts to sleep".
