The University of Missouri (often referred to as Mizzou) is a public research university located in Columbia, Missouri. Founded in 1839, it was the first public university west of the Mississippi River and is the flagship of the four-campus University of Missouri System.

History

The University of Missouri was established in 1839 as the first public university in the Louisiana Purchase territory. The university was founded in response to the Geyer Act, which was passed by the Missouri General Assembly to establish a state university. The citizens of Boone County pledged $117,921 in cash and land to win the location of the university in Columbia.

Campus

The University of Missouri's campus is known for its beautiful architecture and historic buildings. The most iconic structure is the Francis Quadrangle, which features the six columns that are remnants of the original Academic Hall, destroyed by fire in 1892. The campus is also home to the University of Missouri School of Medicine, the University of Missouri School of Law, and the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources.

The University of Missouri offers more than 300 degree programs through 13 major academic divisions. It is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." The university is known for its strong programs in journalism, agriculture, engineering, and health professions.
