Mega (pronunciation: /ˈmɛɡə/) is a unit prefix in the metric system denoting a factor of one million (10^6 or 1,000,000). It has the symbol M. It is commonly used in computing to denote binary multiples of bytes, as in megabyte and megabit.
Etymology
The term "mega" comes from the Ancient Greek word mégas, meaning "great". It was adopted as a unit prefix in the International System of Units (SI) in 1960.
