Meadowmere, Queens
Meadowmere is a small neighborhood located in the New York City borough of Queens. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the city, adjacent to Nassau County, and is one of the smallest neighborhoods in New York City.
Geography[edit]
Meadowmere is surrounded by water on three sides, with Jamaica Bay to the south, Hook Creek to the east, and the Head of Bay to the west. The neighborhood is primarily residential, with a mix of single-family homes, duplexes, and small apartment buildings.
History[edit]
The area that is now Meadowmere was originally inhabited by the Rockaway Indians before being settled by Europeans in the 17th century. The neighborhood's name, which means "meadow by the sea," reflects its natural landscape.
Demographics[edit]
Meadowmere has a diverse population, with a significant number of African American, Hispanic, and White residents. The neighborhood is also home to a small but vibrant Caribbean community.
Transportation[edit]
Meadowmere is served by the MTA's Q3 and Q85 bus routes. The neighborhood is also accessible by car via the Belt Parkway and the Cross Island Parkway.
Education[edit]
Meadowmere is part of the New York City Department of Education's District 27. The neighborhood is served by P.S. 197 (The Ocean School), which offers pre-kindergarten through fifth grade education.
Recreation[edit]
The neighborhood's waterfront location provides opportunities for boating and fishing. Meadowmere Park, located on the eastern edge of the neighborhood, offers green space for outdoor activities.
Notable residents[edit]
While Meadowmere is a small neighborhood, it has been home to several notable individuals, including jazz musician Louis Armstrong and civil rights activist Malcolm X.
