List of Coffee Varieties is a comprehensive catalog of the different types of coffee beans grown worldwide. Coffee, a globally consumed beverage, is primarily produced from two species of coffee plants: Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora (also known as Robusta). Each species has numerous varieties, each with its own unique characteristics and flavor profiles.

Coffea Arabica Varieties

Coffea arabica, or Arabica coffee, accounts for about 60% of global coffee production. It is known for its delicate flavor and low acidity. Some of the most popular Arabica varieties include:

  • Typica: This is the base genetic variety from which many coffee varieties have been developed. Typica has a sweet and delicate flavor, often with fruity notes and high acidity.
  • Bourbon: Named after the island of Bourbon (now Réunion), this variety is a natural mutation of Typica. It has a more complex flavor than Typica, often with a balanced sweetness and acidity.
  • Geisha: Originally from Ethiopia, Geisha is known for its unique floral and tea-like characteristics. It is one of the most expensive and sought-after coffee varieties.

Coffea Canephora Varieties

Coffea canephora, or Robusta coffee, is the second most popular coffee species. It is known for its strong flavor and high caffeine content. Some of the most popular Robusta varieties include:

  • Robusta: This variety is known for its strong, bitter flavor and high caffeine content. It is often used in espresso blends to add body and crema.
  • Nganda: This is a sub-variety of Robusta, known for its strong flavor and resistance to coffee diseases.

Hybrid and Other Varieties

In addition to Arabica and Robusta, there are also hybrid varieties and other species of coffee. These include:

  • Liberica: A different species of coffee, Liberica is known for its unique, smoky flavor and strong aroma.
  • Catimor: A hybrid of Timor and Caturra, Catimor is resistant to coffee leaf rust and has a high yield.
  • Maragogype: A mutation of Typica, Maragogype is known for its large beans and delicate flavor.
