Lev Berg
Russian geographer, biologist, and ichthyologist

Lev Semyonovich Berg (Russian: Лев Семёнович Берг; 14 March 1876 – 24 December 1950) was a prominent Russian geographer, biologist, and ichthyologist. He is best known for his contributions to the fields of biogeography, limnology, and evolutionary biology. Berg's work laid the foundation for many modern ecological and geographical studies in Russia and beyond.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Lev Berg was born in Bender, in the Bessarabia Governorate of the Russian Empire, which is now part of Moldova. From an early age, he showed a keen interest in the natural world, which led him to pursue studies in the natural sciences. Berg attended the Imperial Moscow University, where he studied under some of the leading scientists of the time. He graduated in 1898 with a degree in natural sciences.
Career[edit]
After completing his education, Berg began his career at the Zoological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg. His early work focused on the study of fish and limnology, the study of inland waters. Berg's research on the Caspian Sea and Aral Sea was groundbreaking, providing new insights into the ecology and biology of these unique environments.
Contributions to Ichthyology[edit]
Berg is perhaps best known for his work in ichthyology, the study of fish. He described numerous new species and genera of fish, and his classification system for fish was widely adopted. His book, "Freshwater Fishes of the USSR and Adjacent Countries," remains a seminal work in the field.
Biogeography and Evolution[edit]
In addition to his work in ichthyology, Berg made significant contributions to biogeography, the study of the distribution of species and ecosystems in geographic space and through geological time. He was a proponent of the concept of "landscape science," which integrated physical geography with biological and ecological studies.
Berg was also a critic of Darwinism, proposing an alternative theory of evolution known as "nomogenesis," which suggested that evolution is directed by internal factors rather than solely by natural selection.
Later Life and Legacy[edit]
Throughout his career, Berg held several prestigious positions, including serving as the president of the Geographical Society of the USSR. He was a member of numerous scientific societies and received many awards for his contributions to science.
Berg passed away in 1950, leaving behind a rich legacy of scientific research and publications. His work continues to influence the fields of geography, biology, and ecology.
