Larry Page

Larry Page is an American computer scientist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist best known as one of the co-founders of Google along with Sergey Brin. Page was the chief executive officer of Google from its founding in 1998 until 2001, and again from 2011 until 2015, when he moved to become CEO of Alphabet Inc., the newly created parent company of Google. He stepped down from his role at Alphabet in December 2019 but remains a board member, an employee, and a controlling shareholder.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Larry Page was born on March 26, 1973, in East Lansing, Michigan, to Carl Victor Page, Sr., a pioneer in computer science and artificial intelligence, and Gloria Page, a computer programming instructor. Growing up in a household filled with technology and computers, Page developed an early interest in computing. He attended the University of Michigan for his undergraduate degree in computer engineering and later pursued a graduate degree in computer science at Stanford University, where he met Sergey Brin.
Founding of Google[edit]
While at Stanford, Page and Brin embarked on a project to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. This project, initially named "BackRub," eventually became Google. They developed a new algorithm, called PageRank, which revolutionized the way information is retrieved on the Internet. In 1998, with the support of an initial investment from Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim, Google Inc. was officially founded in a friend's garage in Menlo Park, California.
Leadership at Google and Alphabet[edit]
Under Page's leadership, Google introduced many products and services beyond its search engine, including Gmail, Google Maps, and the Android operating system, which have become integral to the digital lives of billions of people. In 2011, Page resumed the role of CEO, succeeding Eric Schmidt, and focused on streamlining the company's operations and emphasizing product development and technology innovation.
In 2015, Page announced the creation of Alphabet Inc., a conglomerate that would serve as the parent company of Google and several former Google subsidiaries. Page became CEO of Alphabet, with Sundar Pichai taking over as CEO of Google. Page's vision for Alphabet was to provide greater autonomy to diverse business units within the company, fostering innovation across different sectors, including technology, life sciences, and investment.
Philanthropy and Personal Life[edit]
Page is also known for his philanthropic efforts, primarily through the Carl Victor Page Memorial Foundation, named after his father. He has donated to various causes, including flu vaccination programs, Ebola virus epidemic relief, and renewable energy research. Page is an advocate for clean energy and has invested in electric vehicle companies and projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
Page is married to Lucinda Southworth since 2007, and the couple has two children. He is known for his reclusive nature, rarely making public appearances or giving interviews.
Legacy[edit]
Larry Page's contributions to technology and the Internet are immense. Under his leadership, Google has not only dominated the search engine market but also made significant advances in various fields, including software, hardware, and artificial intelligence. Page's work has fundamentally changed how information is accessed and used, making it easier for people to find what they need online. His vision for Alphabet aims to ensure that innovation continues across a broad spectrum of industries.
