Stanford University
Stanford University
Stanford University (pronounced /ˈstæn.fərd/) is a private research university located in Stanford, California. The university was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid fever at age 15 the previous year.
Etymology
The university is named after Leland Stanford Jr., the only child of Leland and Jane Stanford. The Stanfords decided to use their wealth to create an institution in their son's honor, instead of leaving it to chance and charitable institutions as was the custom of the time.
