ICD-9-CM (pronounced "eye-see-dee-nine-see-em") is an acronym for the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification. It is a system used in healthcare to code and classify morbidity data from the inpatient and outpatient records, physician offices, and most National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) surveys.

Etymology

The term "ICD-9-CM" is derived from the International Classification of Diseases, which is the ninth revision, and the Clinical Modification denotes that it is a modification of the original ICD-9. The ICD-9-CM is based on the World Health Organization's Ninth Revision, International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9).

Usage

ICD-9-CM is used by physicians, healthcare providers, researchers, health information managers and coders, health policy makers, insurers and patient organizations to classify diseases and other health problems recorded on many types of health records, including death certificates and insurance claims.

Structure

ICD-9-CM is divided into three volumes. Volume 1 and 2 contain diagnosis codes. These are used for all settings. Volume 3 contains procedure codes for surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. These are used by hospitals.
