ICD-9-CM
ICD-9-CM (pronounced "eye-see-dee-nine-see-em") is an acronym for the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification. It is a system used in healthcare to code and classify morbidity data from the inpatient and outpatient records, physician offices, and most National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) surveys.
Etymology
The term "ICD-9-CM" is derived from the International Classification of Diseases, which is the ninth revision, and the Clinical Modification denotes that it is a modification of the original ICD-9. The ICD-9-CM is based on the World Health Organization's Ninth Revision, International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9).
