Georgie Pie was a fast food chain in New Zealand that specialized in meat pies. It was established in 1977 by Progressive Enterprises, a subsidiary of Foodstuffs (NZ) Ltd. The chain was known for its slogan "The Big Pie, Little Price" and became a beloved part of New Zealand's fast food culture.

History

Georgie Pie was founded in 1977 with the first store opening in Kelston, a suburb of Auckland. The concept was to offer a variety of meat pies at affordable prices, targeting families and young people. The chain expanded rapidly during the 1980s and early 1990s, reaching a peak of 32 stores nationwide.

Menu

The menu at Georgie Pie featured a range of meat pies, including:

• Mince and Cheese
• Steak and Cheese
• Chicken and Vegetable
• Bacon and Egg

In addition to pies, the menu also included French fries, soft drinks, and desserts such as apple pie.

Decline and Closure

Despite its initial success, Georgie Pie faced increasing competition from international fast food chains like McDonald's and Burger King. In 1996, Progressive Enterprises sold the chain to McDonald's New Zealand, which gradually closed down all Georgie Pie outlets. The last store closed in 1998.

Revival

In 2013, McDonald's New Zealand announced the return of Georgie Pie, initially offering the pies through selected McDonald's outlets. The revival was met with enthusiasm from former fans of the brand.

Legacy

Georgie Pie remains a nostalgic brand for many New Zealanders who grew up enjoying its affordable and tasty pies. The brand's revival has kept its memory alive, even though it no longer operates as a standalone chain.
