Gary Firestein
Gary Firestein is a prominent American rheumatologist and researcher known for his contributions to the field of rheumatology, particularly in the study of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). He has made significant advancements in understanding the pathogenesis of RA and has been involved in the development of new therapeutic strategies.
Early Life and Education
Gary Firestein was born in New York City. He completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, where he earned a degree in Biology. He then attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he received his MD degree.
Career
After completing his medical degree, Firestein pursued a residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He subsequently completed a fellowship in rheumatology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Firestein joined the faculty at UCSD, where he has held various positions, including Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology. He has also served as the Dean of Translational Medicine at UCSD.
Research Contributions
Gary Firestein's research has focused on the mechanisms of inflammation and joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis. His work has led to a better understanding of the role of cytokines, particularly tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), in the pathogenesis of RA. He has also been involved in the development of biologic therapies targeting these cytokines, which have revolutionized the treatment of RA.
