Fenethazine

Fenethazine is a phenothiazine derivative that is used as a neuroleptic drug. It was introduced in the 1960s by Rhône-Poulenc and is used in Europe for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

Pharmacology[edit]

Fenethazine acts as an antagonist of the D2 receptor, which is a type of dopamine receptor. This action is believed to be responsible for its antipsychotic effects. Fenethazine also has anticholinergic and antihistaminic properties, which can lead to side effects such as dry mouth and sedation.

Clinical Use[edit]

Fenethazine is used in the treatment of various psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe anxiety disorders. It can also be used to treat nausea and vomiting, as well as intractable hiccups.

Side Effects[edit]

Common side effects of fenethazine include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, dry mouth, and constipation. More serious side effects can include tardive dyskinesia, a condition characterized by involuntary movements, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a potentially life-threatening reaction to antipsychotic drugs.
