Falun Gong
Falun Gong
Falun Gong (pronounced: /ˈfɑːlʊn ˈɡɒŋ/), also known as Falun Dafa (pronounced: /ˈfɑːlʊn ˈdɑːfɑː/), is a spiritual practice that combines meditation and qigong exercises with a moral philosophy centered on the tenets of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance. The practice emphasizes morality and the cultivation of virtue, and identifies as a qigong practice of the Buddhist school, though its teachings also incorporate elements drawn from Taoist traditions.
Etymology
The term "Falun" (pronounced: /ˈfɑːlʊn/) translates to "Dharma Wheel" or "Law Wheel" in English. "Gong" (pronounced: /ˈɡɒŋ/) is a term that denotes "work" or "cultivation practice". Therefore, Falun Gong can be translated as "Dharma Wheel Work" or "Law Wheel Cultivation Practice".
Practice
Falun Gong involves the practice of meditation and slow-moving qigong exercises, which are a set of practices coordinated with breathing and designed to align the body, mind, and spirit. The practice also involves the study of teachings, primarily through reading the texts Zhuan Falun and Falun Gong.
