Eurotransplant (pronounced: /ˈjʊərəʊˌtrænsplɑːnt/) is an international non-profit organization responsible for encouraging and coordinating organ transplants in its member countries.
Etymology
The term "Eurotransplant" is a combination of "Euro", referring to Europe, and "transplant", referring to the medical procedure of transplanting organs or tissues.
History
Eurotransplant was founded in 1967 by Jon J. van Rood, a Dutch immunologist. The organization is based in Leiden, the Netherlands. It serves eight member countries: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Slovenia.
Function
Eurotransplant manages and facilitates the process of organ matching and allocation, using a computerized system that takes into account medical urgency, waiting time, and geographical distance. The organs involved include the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and intestines.
