Escarpment
Escarpment is a steep slope or long cliff that forms as an effect of faulting or erosion and separates two relatively level areas of differing elevations. Often found at the edge of a plateau or in mountain ranges, escarpments can be dramatic landscape features that offer significant changes in elevation over a relatively short horizontal distance. These geological formations are important in dictating the flow of water in an area, contributing to the physical geography, and often influencing human settlement and activity around them.
Formation
Escarpments can form through a variety of geological processes. One common method is through the action of faults where the earth's crust has moved vertically, leaving one side elevated relative to the other. This is known as tectonic activity. Another method of formation is through differential erosion, where softer rock erodes away leaving behind the harder rock as a steep slope or cliff. Types of Escarpments
There are several types of escarpments, each defined by their method of formation or their geographical location. For example, a fault scarp is directly created by the movement of a fault. A cuesta is an asymmetrical ridge with a gentle slope on one side and a steep slope on the other, often formed in sedimentary rock layers. The hogback is similar to a cuesta but with steep slopes on both sides, typically formed in more resistant rock layers.
