Endodontic files and reamers

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

(Redirected from Endodontic file)

Endodontic files and reamers are tools used in dentistry for root canal treatment. They help in cleaning and shaping the root canal, with the aim of ensuring the root canal is properly sealed.

Overview

Endodontic files and reamers are made from stainless steel and come in various sizes and tapers. They are used to mechanically clean and shape the inside of the root canal system, removing the pulp tissue and any other debris that may be present.

Types

There are several types of endodontic files and reamers, including:

  • K-files: These are the most commonly used endodontic files. They have a square cross-section and are used for both cleaning and shaping the root canal.
  • H-files: These files have a more aggressive cutting action than K-files and are used for cleaning the root canal.
  • Reamers: These are used to enlarge the root canal and are less flexible than files.

Usage

Endodontic files and reamers are used in a process called root canal therapy. This is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. During root canal therapy, the pulp and nerve are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.
