The Emblem of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic was the official state emblem of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic (Lithuanian SSR), a constituent republic of the Soviet Union. The emblem was adopted in 1940 and was used until 1990 when Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union.
Design
The emblem of the Lithuanian SSR was designed in accordance with the principles of socialist heraldry. It prominently featured symbols of communism and the Soviet Union.
The emblem consisted of a red star at the top, symbolizing the Communist Party. Below the star, there was a rising sun, representing the future of the Soviet people. The sun's rays were depicted spreading outwards.
In the center of the emblem, there was a hammer and sickle, the universal symbol of communism, representing the unity of the working class and the peasantry. The hammer and sickle were placed on a background of a red shield.
The emblem was surrounded by a wreath of wheat, symbolizing agriculture and the prosperity of the Soviet state. The wreath was tied with a red ribbon bearing the motto "Visų šalių proletarai, vienykitės!" in Lithuanian and "Пролетарии всех стран, соединяйтесь!" in Russian, which translates to "Workers of the world, unite!"
Historical Context
The Lithuanian SSR was established in 1940 following the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states. The emblem was created to reflect the new socialist identity of Lithuania under Soviet rule. It replaced the previous national symbols of Lithuania.
The emblem remained in use throughout the existence of the Lithuanian SSR. In 1990, as part of the Singing Revolution and the broader dissolution of the Soviet Union, Lithuania declared its independence and the emblem was replaced by the traditional coat of arms of Lithuania.
