John Cleese
John Cleese (born 27 October 1939) is an English actor, comedian, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for his work with the comedy group Monty Python, as well as for his role in the television series Fawlty Towers and the film series A Fish Called Wanda.
Early Life[edit]
John Marwood Cleese was born in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England. He attended Clifton College and later studied at Downing College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the Cambridge Footlights.
Career[edit]
Monty Python[edit]
Cleese is one of the founding members of the comedy group Monty Python, which was formed in 1969. The group created the television show Monty Python's Flying Circus, which became a significant influence on comedy worldwide. Cleese was known for his roles in various sketches, including the "Ministry of Silly Walks" and "Dead Parrot" sketches.
Fawlty Towers[edit]
In 1975, Cleese co-created and starred in the television series Fawlty Towers, playing the character Basil Fawlty. The show is considered one of the greatest British television comedies of all time.
Film Career[edit]
Cleese has appeared in numerous films, including Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and The Meaning of Life. He also starred in and co-wrote the film A Fish Called Wanda, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Later Work[edit]
In addition to his work with Monty Python and Fawlty Towers, Cleese has appeared in various other television shows and films. He has also done voice work for animated films such as Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third.
Personal Life[edit]
Cleese has been married four times and has two daughters. He is known for his outspoken views on various social and political issues.
