Devon Air Ambulance

Devon Air Ambulance (pronunciation: /ˈdɛvən ɛər ˈæmbjələns/) is a charitable organization that provides emergency medical services via helicopter to the county of Devon, England.

Etymology

The term "Devon Air Ambulance" is derived from its location, Devon, and its primary function, which is to provide air ambulance services. The word "Devon" is of Old English origin, named after the Celtic people known as the Dumnonii. "Air Ambulance" is a compound word, with "air" derived from the Latin 'aer' and "ambulance" from the French 'ambulant', meaning 'walking', a reference to early medical care where patients were moved by lifting or wheeling.

History

Devon Air Ambulance was established in 1992 following the death of a local child who could not receive timely medical assistance due to the rural location. The service was initially run by a group of volunteers and funded by community donations. Today, it operates two helicopters and attends to an average of 1,500 missions per year.

Operations

The Devon Air Ambulance operates two Eurocopter EC135 helicopters, which are capable of reaching any part of Devon within 15 minutes. The helicopters are equipped with advanced medical equipment and staffed by highly trained paramedics and pilots. The service operates 19 hours a day, seven days a week, and is funded entirely by donations.
