Air medical services (pronunciation: /ɛər mɛdɪkəl sɜːrvɪsɛz/) are a comprehensive term covering the use of air transportation to move patients to and from healthcare facilities and accident scenes. The transport of patients by helicopter or airplane is an essential part of emergency medical services in many areas.

Etymology

The term "air medical services" is derived from the words "air" (from Old English ǣr, meaning "air, atmosphere"), "medical" (from Latin medicus, meaning "physician"), and "services" (from Old English sērvice, meaning "the action of helping or doing work for someone").

Types of Air Medical Services

Air medical services can be divided into two broad categories: Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Helicopters and Fixed-Wing Air Ambulances.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Helicopters

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Helicopters, also known as air ambulances, are helicopters specifically outfitted to transport critically ill or injured patients from the scene of an emergency to a hospital.

Fixed-Wing Air Ambulances

Fixed-Wing Air Ambulances are typically used for longer distance transports. They are also used when a patient needs to be moved from one hospital to another that is a significant distance away.
