Dabeli
Dabeli (pronounced: dah-bay-lee) is a popular street food originating from the Kutch region in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is a type of sandwich packed with a spicy potato mixture garnished with pomegranate, peanuts, and sev. The term "Dabeli" comes from the Gujarati word "dabelo" which means "pressed" in English.
Etymology
The term "Dabeli" is derived from the Gujarati word "dabelo", which means "pressed". This is in reference to the method of preparation where the spicy potato mixture is pressed between two pieces of pav (a type of Indian bread).
Ingredients
The main ingredients in Dabeli are potatoes, pomegranate, peanuts, and sev. The potato mixture is made by mashing boiled potatoes and mixing them with a special dabeli masala. This mixture is then placed between two pieces of pav which are lightly toasted on a pan with butter.
Preparation
The preparation of Dabeli involves several steps. First, the potatoes are boiled and mashed. Then, the dabeli masala is prepared by mixing several spices together. This masala is then added to the mashed potatoes along with tamarind chutney and a little bit of water. The mixture is cooked until it thickens. The pav is then lightly toasted on a pan with butter. The potato mixture is placed between the pav along with pomegranate, peanuts, and sev. The Dabeli is then ready to be served.
