Cyproterone

Cyproterone (pronounced: sy-pro-ter-one) is a synthetic derivative of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, a naturally occurring steroid hormone. It is primarily used in the treatment of androgen-dependent conditions such as prostate cancer and certain types of hypersexuality.

Etymology

The term "Cyproterone" is derived from the chemical name 6-chloro-1β,2β-dihydro-17-hydroxy-3'H-cyclopropa(1,2)pregna-1,4,6-triene-3,20-dione. The prefix "Cypro-" is derived from the chemical structure of the compound, which includes a cyclopropane ring.

Usage

Cyproterone is used in the treatment of androgen-dependent conditions due to its ability to block the effects of androgens (male hormones) in the body. It is commonly used in combination with other hormones for the treatment of prostate cancer and certain types of hypersexuality. It is also used in some forms of hormone therapy for transgender women.
