The idea for the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital was first proposed in 2007 by the York Region government. The hospital was officially opened on February 7, 2021, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The hospital was initially used as a dedicated resource to support the province's COVID-19 response.

The Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital spans over 1.2 million square feet and includes 342 beds. It features a modern emergency department, surgical services, and advanced diagnostic imaging.
