Chloramphenicol acetyltransferase

Chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) is an enzyme that detoxifies the antibiotic chloramphenicol and is responsible for chloramphenicol resistance in bacteria. This enzyme covalently attaches an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to chloramphenicol, which prevents the drug from binding to ribosomes.

Structure

Chloramphenicol acetyltransferase is a relatively small protein, with a molecular weight of approximately 25,000 daltons. The enzyme is composed of two identical subunits, each of which binds one molecule of chloramphenicol and one molecule of acetyl-CoA.
