Cannabis strains
Cannabis strains
Cannabis strains are either pure or hybrid varieties of the plant genus Cannabis, which encompasses the species Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis.
Pronunciation
- Cannabis: /ˈkænəbɪs/
- Strains: /streɪnz/
Etymology
The term "Cannabis" is derived from the Greek word kannabis, while "strain" comes from the Old French estreindre, meaning "to press tightly".
Varieties
Varieties are developed to intensify specific characteristics of the plant, or to differentiate the strain for the purposes of marketing or to make it more effective as a drug. Variety names are typically chosen by their growers, and often reflect properties of the plant such as taste, color, smell, or the origin of the variety.
Cannabis sativa
Cannabis sativa strains are generally a lighter shade of green with narrow leaves and grow tall and thin, making them better suited for outdoor growing – especially since some strains can reach heights of up to 25 feet.
Cannabis indica
Cannabis indica strains are dark green, have broad leaves, are short and bushy, and grow faster than the Sativa variety. They are better suited for growing indoors.
Cannabis ruderalis
Cannabis ruderalis is a species native to Russia that flowers earlier and is able to withstand harsher conditions than Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. It is the hardiest of the three, but it is relatively low in THC content and generally grown for its CBD content.
