Briarwood, Queens

Briarwood, Queens is a neighborhood located in the borough of Queens in New York City. It is part of Queens Community Board 8 and is bounded by the Van Wyck Expressway to the west, Parsons Boulevard to the east, Union Turnpike to the north, and Hillside Avenue to the south.

History

Briarwood was developed in the early 20th century. The name "Briarwood" was given to the neighborhood by the Briarwood Land Company, which built housing there during the 1920s. The company named the neighborhood after the briar wood that grew in the area.

Demographics

Briarwood is a diverse neighborhood with a significant number of residents of various ethnic backgrounds. The neighborhood has a large population of Jewish Americans, African Americans, Hispanic and Latino Americans, and Asian Americans, among others.

Education

Briarwood is served by the New York City Department of Education. The neighborhood is home to several public and private schools, including P.S. 117 J. Keld/Briarwood School, P.S. 217 Colonel David Marcus School, and Archbishop Molloy High School.

Transportation

Briarwood is served by the New York City Subway's E, F, and J trains at the Briarwood station. The neighborhood is also served by several bus lines, including the Q20A, Q20B, Q44, and Q60.

Notable people

Several notable people have lived in Briarwood, including comedian Ray Romano, actress Bernadette Peters, and former New York City Mayor John Lindsay.
