Breast duct endoscopy
Breast duct endoscopy
Breast duct endoscopy (pronunciation: /ˈbrɛst dʌkt ˌɛndəˈskɒpi/), also known as ductoscopy, is a medical procedure used to examine the mammary ducts in the breast. The term originates from the Greek words "endo" (meaning within) and "skopein" (meaning to look or see).
Procedure
Breast duct endoscopy involves the insertion of a tiny, flexible endoscope into the nipple. The endoscope is then guided through the ductal system, allowing the physician to visualize the inside of the breast ducts. This procedure is often used to investigate the cause of nipple discharge or to locate precancerous lesions or cancer cells within the ducts.
Indications
Breast duct endoscopy is typically indicated for patients with spontaneous nipple discharge, particularly when the discharge is bloody or comes from a single duct. It may also be used in patients with a history of breast cancer to detect early signs of recurrence.
Risks and Complications
As with any medical procedure, breast duct endoscopy carries some risks. These may include infection, bleeding, or damage to the breast tissue or ducts. However, these complications are rare and the procedure is generally considered safe.
