Brain disease (pronunciation: /breɪn dɪˈziːz/) refers to a broad category of illnesses, disorders, and conditions that affect the brain's structure or function.
Etymology
The term "brain disease" is derived from the Old English words 'brægen' (brain) and 'disease' (dis-ease), which means a lack of ease or a condition that prevents good health.
Types of Brain Diseases
There are several types of brain diseases, including:
- Neurodegenerative diseases: These are diseases in which nerve cells, or neurons, break down or die. Examples include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease.
- Mental disorders: These are illnesses that disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, mood, and ability to relate to others. Examples include depression, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia.
- Brain tumors: These are masses of abnormal cells in the brain. They can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
- Cerebrovascular diseases: These are conditions that affect the blood vessels and blood supply to the brain. Examples include stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA).
- Infections of the brain: These are caused by viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms. Examples include meningitis, encephalitis, and brain abscess.
