Etymology
The name "Bourn Hall Clinic" is derived from its location in the village of Bourn, Cambridgeshire, England. The term "clinic" is derived from the Greek word "κλίνειν" (klinein), which means "to slope, lean or recline". Hence, it is a place where patients recline to receive medical treatment.
History
Bourn Hall Clinic was established in 1980 by Sir Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe, following their successful development of the IVF procedure. The clinic was set up in Bourn Hall, a historic manor house in Cambridgeshire. The first IVF baby, Louise Brown, was born in 1978, two years before the clinic was officially opened.
