Fertility preservation

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Fertility preservation is a term used to describe procedures that aim to preserve an individual's ability to reproduce. This can be particularly important for individuals who are at risk of infertility due to medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, or due to age or other factors.

Overview

Fertility preservation can involve a number of different procedures, depending on the individual's circumstances and needs. These can include egg freezing, sperm freezing, embryo freezing, and ovarian tissue freezing. These procedures can be used to preserve fertility in individuals who are undergoing treatments that may affect their fertility, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or in individuals who wish to delay childbearing for personal or medical reasons.

Procedures

Egg Freezing

Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, involves the extraction, freezing and storage of a woman's eggs. This can allow a woman to preserve her fertility until she is ready to start a family.

Sperm Freezing

Sperm freezing, also known as sperm banking, involves the collection, freezing and storage of a man's sperm. This can allow a man to preserve his fertility for future use.

Embryo Freezing

Embryo freezing, also known as embryo cryopreservation, involves the fertilization of a woman's eggs with a man's sperm in a laboratory, followed by the freezing and storage of the resulting embryos. This can allow a couple to preserve their fertility for future use.

Ovarian Tissue Freezing

Ovarian tissue freezing involves the surgical removal and freezing of a piece of a woman's ovary. This can allow a woman to preserve her fertility for future use.

Risks and Considerations

While fertility preservation can provide individuals with the opportunity to have biological children in the future, it is not without risks. These can include the risks associated with the procedures themselves, as well as the potential for the preserved eggs, sperm, embryos or ovarian tissue to not result in a successful pregnancy in the future.
