Bodmin Hospital
Bodmin Hospital is a mental health facility located in Bodmin, Cornwall, England. It is managed by the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
History
Bodmin Hospital was established in the mid-19th century as the Cornwall County Asylum. The original building was designed by the architect John Foulston and opened in 1820. The facility was intended to provide care for individuals with mental illness from across Cornwall.
In the early 20th century, the hospital expanded to include additional wards and treatment facilities. During this period, it was renamed the Cornwall Mental Hospital. Following the National Health Service (NHS) reforms in 1948, the hospital became part of the NHS and was renamed Bodmin Hospital.
Services
Bodmin Hospital provides a range of mental health services, including inpatient and outpatient care, psychiatric assessments, and therapy services. The hospital has specialized units for the treatment of acute mental health conditions, dementia, and substance abuse disorders.
The hospital also offers community-based services, including crisis intervention and home treatment teams, to support patients in their own homes.
Facilities
The hospital campus includes several buildings, each dedicated to different aspects of mental health care. Key facilities include:
- The Harvest Ward, which provides care for older adults with mental health conditions.
- The Fettle House, a unit specializing in the treatment of substance abuse disorders.
- The Garner Ward, which offers acute inpatient care for adults.

Bodmin Hospital is involved in various research initiatives aimed at improving mental health care. The hospital collaborates with academic institutions and participates in clinical trials to advance the understanding and treatment of mental health conditions.
The hospital also serves as a training site for medical students, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals. It offers educational programs and placements to support the development of future mental health practitioners.
