Banana split
(Redirected from Banana Split)
Banana Split is a popular dessert that originated in the United States. It is typically made with a banana, three scoops of ice cream, and various toppings. The banana is split lengthwise and placed in a long dish called a boat. A scoop of ice cream is placed in between the split banana. The ice cream is usually one scoop each of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. The dessert is then topped with whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and nuts.
History
The banana split was invented in 1904 by David Evans Strickler, a 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist at Tassel Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Strickler enjoyed inventing sundaes at the store’s soda fountain. His creation was a hit and quickly became a popular treat at the pharmacy.
Variations
There are many variations of the banana split. Some variations include additional toppings such as hot fudge, caramel sauce, pineapple, and sprinkles. In some regions, the banana split is served with a cherry on top. In other regions, the banana split is served with a scoop of sherbet instead of ice cream.
Cultural Impact
The banana split has had a significant cultural impact. It has been featured in numerous movies, television shows, and songs. The city of Latrobe, Pennsylvania holds an annual Banana Split Festival in August to celebrate the dessert's history in the city.
