Astraphobia

Astraphobia (pronounced: as-tra-fo-bia) is a specific phobia, characterized by an extreme and irrational fear of thunder and lightning. It is also known as Brontophobia, Keraunophobia, or Tonitrophobia.

Etymology

The term 'Astraphobia' is derived from the Greek words 'Astrape' which means 'lightning' and 'Phobos' meaning 'fear'.

Symptoms

Individuals with Astraphobia may experience intense anxiety or panic attacks during a thunderstorm. Symptoms may include rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, trembling, nausea, and an overwhelming desire to seek shelter.

Causes

The exact cause of Astraphobia is unknown. However, it is believed to be a combination of genetic factors and environmental influences. Some individuals may develop this phobia after a traumatic experience involving thunder or lightning.

Treatment

Treatment for Astraphobia typically involves cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps individuals understand and change thought patterns that lead to fear and anxiety. Exposure therapy, a type of CBT, may also be used to gradually and safely expose individuals to the fear-inducing stimulus (thunder and lightning) in a controlled environment.
