The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a continental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The Games are regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The first Asian Games were held in New Delhi, India in 1951.

History

The idea of the Asian Games was first proposed in 1948 during the London Olympics by Indian International Olympic Committee representative Guru Dutt Sondhi. The Asian Games Federation was formed, and the first Games were held in 1951 in New Delhi, India. Since then, the Games have grown in size and stature, with the number of participating countries and athletes increasing significantly.

Organization

The Asian Games are organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), which is responsible for overseeing the Games and ensuring they are conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The host city is selected through a bidding process, and the Games are held every four years.

Sports

The Asian Games feature a wide range of sports, including traditional Olympic sports such as athletics, swimming, and gymnastics, as well as sports that are popular in Asia, such as kabaddi, sepaktakraw, and wushu. The number of sports and events has varied over the years, with new sports being added and others being removed.

Participating Nations

All 45 member countries of the Olympic Council of Asia are eligible to participate in the Asian Games. These countries span the entire continent of Asia, from the Middle East to East Asia, and from Central Asia to Southeast Asia.

Notable Editions

• 1951 Asian Games: The inaugural Games held in New Delhi, India.
• 1962 Asian Games: Held in Jakarta, Indonesia, marked by political controversies.
• 1990 Asian Games: Held in Beijing, China, saw the return of several countries that had previously boycotted the Games.
• 2018 Asian Games: Held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, the first time the Games were co-hosted by two cities.

Future Games

The next edition of the Asian Games is scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China in 2022. Future host cities are selected through a bidding process and are announced several years in advance.
