Andrea Hayes-Jordan (pronunciation: An-dree-a Hays-Jor-dan) is a renowned pediatric surgeon and oncologist known for her pioneering work in the field of pediatric oncology.
Etymology
The name 'Andrea' is of Greek origin, derived from the word 'Andros' which means 'manly' or 'brave'. 'Hayes' is an English surname of Irish origin, meaning 'descendant of Aodh', and 'Jordan' is a Hebrew name meaning 'to flow down' or 'descend'.
Career
Hayes-Jordan is recognized for her significant contributions to the treatment of Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT), a rare and aggressive form of cancer that primarily affects children and young adults. She developed a novel surgical procedure known as Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), which has significantly improved survival rates for DSRCT patients.
Education
Hayes-Jordan received her medical degree from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She completed her residency in General Surgery at the University of California, Davis, and a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at the University of Michigan.
Affiliations
She is currently the Surgeon-In-Chief at the North Carolina Children's Hospital and the Byah Thomason Doxey-Sanford Doxey Distinguished Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina.
