Altesse

Altesse

Altesse is a white wine grape variety primarily grown in the Savoie region of France. It is known for producing wines with a distinctive aromatic profile and is often associated with the production of high-quality white wines in the region.

History

The origins of the Altesse grape are somewhat obscure, but it is believed to have been introduced to the Savoie region in the late Middle Ages. Some theories suggest that it may have originated from the Balkans or the Middle East, brought to France by returning Crusaders. Over the centuries, Altesse has become well-adapted to the alpine climate of Savoie.

Viticulture

Altesse vines are well-suited to the mountainous terrain of Savoie, thriving in the region's continental climate with its cold winters and warm summers. The grape is typically grown on steep slopes, which provide good drainage and exposure to sunlight. Altesse is known for its resistance to mildew and other common vine diseases, making it a reliable choice for growers in the region.

Wine Characteristics

Wines made from Altesse grapes are often characterized by their floral and fruity aromas, with notes of pear, peach, and honey. They typically have a good balance of acidity and minerality, which contributes to their freshness and aging potential. Altesse wines are usually dry, although some producers may create off-dry or sweet styles.

Appellations

Altesse is the primary grape used in the production of Roussette de Savoie AOC, a designated appellation d'origine contrôlée in the Savoie region. The grape is also used in other local appellations, often blended with other varieties to create unique regional wines.
