Mildew

Mildew (/ˈmɪldjuː/) is a type of fungus that grows in damp environments and can cause damage to plants and materials. It is often white or grey in color and has a powdery or fluffy appearance.

Etymology

The term "mildew" originates from the Old English words "mildeaw", which means "honeydew" or "nectar", and "dēaw", which means "dew". This is likely due to the dew-like appearance of the fungus.

Types of Mildew

There are two main types of mildew: Powdery Mildew and Downy Mildew. Both types are plant pathogens but they affect different types of plants and are caused by different species of fungi.

Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew is a common disease that affects a wide range of plants. It is characterized by white, powdery spots on the leaves and stems of the plant. The fungus that causes powdery mildew is in the Erysiphales order.

Downy Mildew

Downy mildew is another common plant disease, but it primarily affects plants in wet, humid conditions. It is characterized by yellow spots on the tops of leaves and a white or grey mold on the underside. The fungus that causes downy mildew is in the Peronosporales order.

Prevention and Treatment

Prevention of mildew involves controlling the environment to reduce humidity and improve air circulation. Treatment often involves the use of fungicides or other anti-fungal treatments.
