Alex Comfort

Alex Comfort (pronounced /ˈælɪks ˈkʌmfərt/) was a British scientist, doctor, gerontologist, anarchist, pacifist, and writer, best known for his nonfiction sex manual, The Joy of Sex.

Etymology

The name Alex is a short form of Alexander, from the Greek Alexandros, meaning "defender of men". Comfort is an English surname of Norman origin, derived from the French confort, meaning "strength".

Biography

Alex Comfort was born in London, England on 10 February 1920. He studied biology and medicine at the University of Cambridge and University College Hospital, London. Comfort's diverse career included significant contributions to the fields of gerontology and sexology, as well as to anarchism and pacifism.

Works

Comfort's most famous work is The Joy of Sex, a comprehensive sex manual first published in 1972. The book was groundbreaking in its frank and positive approach to human sexuality. Comfort also wrote numerous other books on a wide range of topics, including anarchism, pacifism, gerontology, and poetry.
