East Java (Jawa Timur) is a province located in the eastern part of the island of Java, Indonesia. It is the second most populous province in the country, with a population of over 37.5 million people. The capital of East Java is Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia.

Geography[edit]

East Java is bordered by the Java Sea to the north, the Indian Ocean to the south, the Bali Strait to the east, and the provinces of Central Java and Yogyakarta to the west. The province covers an area of approximately 47,800 square kilometers, making it the third largest in Java after West Java and Central Java.

The history of East Java dates back to the Majapahit Empire, which was one of the most powerful empires in Southeast Asia during the 13th to 15th centuries. The empire's capital, Trowulan, is located in present-day East Java.

East Java's economy is diverse and robust, with key sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and tourism. The province is a major producer of rice, sugar cane, coffee, and tobacco in Indonesia.
