Yoruba people
Yoruba people are an ethnic group that inhabits western Africa, mainly Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. The Yoruba constitute about 44 million people in total. The vast majority of this population is from Nigeria, where the Yoruba make up 21% of the country's population, making them one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa.
History[edit]
The Yoruba history is linked to the mythic city of Ile-Ife, considered the cradle of the Yoruba people. According to Yoruba tradition, the city was founded by the god Oduduwa, who is considered the progenitor of the Yoruba kings.
Language[edit]
The Yoruba language is a member of the Niger-Congo language family. It is spoken by the Yoruba people in Nigeria, Benin, and Togo, and by communities in other parts of Africa, the Americas, and Europe. The language has several dialects.
Religion[edit]
Yoruba religion is a major part of Yoruba identity. It includes the worship of a pantheon of deities known as orishas. Yoruba culture is also known for its rich traditions in music, dance, and literature. The Yoruba have a tradition of oral literature, including folktales, proverbs, riddles, and songs.
