African diaspora
African diaspora
The African diaspora (/ˌæfrɪkən daɪˈæspərə/) refers to the communities throughout the world that have resulted by descent from the movement in historic times of peoples from Africa, predominantly to the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and among other areas around the globe.
Etymology
The term "diaspora" comes from an ancient Greek word meaning "to scatter about." And that's exactly what the people of the African diaspora have done over the centuries, scattering across the globe to all corners of the earth.
History
The African slave trade, the largest forced migration in the history of humanity, is the most common cause of the African diaspora. Other historical events such as explorations, colonization, and the Scramble for Africa have also contributed to the African diaspora.
