Braintree, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 39,143 at the 2020 census. Braintree is part of the Greater Boston area and is located 12 miles south of downtown Boston.

History

Braintree was first settled in 1625 and was officially incorporated in 1640. The town was named after Braintree, Essex in England. Braintree is known for being the birthplace of several prominent figures in American history, including John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and John Hancock.

Geography

Braintree is located at 42°12′30″N 71°0′0″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 14.5 square miles, of which 13.9 square miles is land and 0.6 square miles is water. The town is bordered by Quincy, Massachusetts to the north, Weymouth, Massachusetts to the east, Randolph, Massachusetts to the west, and Holbrook, Massachusetts to the south.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 39,143 people, 14,382 households, and 9,906 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,815.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 81.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 8.7% Asian, and 4.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.5% of the population.

Education

Braintree is served by the Braintree Public Schools system, which includes Braintree High School, two middle schools, and six elementary schools. The town is also home to several private schools, including Thayer Academy and Archbishop Williams High School.

Economy

Braintree has a diverse economy with a mix of retail, manufacturing, and service industries. The South Shore Plaza is one of the largest shopping malls in New England and is a major retail center in the town. Braintree is also home to several corporate headquarters and business parks.

Transportation

Braintree is well-connected by several major highways, including Interstate 93, U.S. Route 1, and Massachusetts Route 3. The town is also served by the MBTA's Red Line, with a station at Braintree Station, providing direct access to downtown Boston.
