Weymouth is a city in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. It is one of the oldest towns in the state, having been settled in 1622 and incorporated in 1635. Weymouth is part of the Greater Boston area and is located approximately 12 miles south of Boston.
History
Weymouth was originally settled as Wessagusset Colony in 1622 by Thomas Weston and was the second settlement in Massachusetts, following Plymouth Colony. The colony struggled initially and was later reorganized and renamed Weymouth in 1635. The town was named after Weymouth, Dorset in England.
Geography
Weymouth is bordered by Braintree to the west, Quincy to the north, Hingham to the east, and Holbrook and Rockland to the south. The city has a total area of 21.9 square miles, of which 17.1 square miles is land and 4.8 square miles is water.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, Weymouth had a population of 57,437. The city has a diverse population with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas.
Government
Weymouth operates under a mayor-council form of government. The current mayor is Robert L. Hedlund. The city council consists of eleven members, six of whom are elected from districts and five at-large.
Education
Weymouth is served by the Weymouth Public Schools system, which includes one high school, one middle school, and several elementary schools. The city is also home to several private schools and is in proximity to various higher education institutions in the Greater Boston area.
Transportation
Weymouth is well-connected by several major highways, including Route 3, Route 18, and Route 53. Public transportation is provided by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), with several bus routes and the Greenbush Line of the MBTA Commuter Rail serving the city.
