Randolph is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 34,984. Randolph is one of thirteen Massachusetts municipalities that have applied for, and been granted, city forms of government but wish to retain "The town of" in their official names.

History

Randolph was settled in 1710 and was officially incorporated in 1793. The town was named after Peyton Randolph, the first President of the Continental Congress. During the 19th century, Randolph became a major center for the manufacture of boots and shoes. The town's population grew rapidly during this period, and it became a bustling industrial community.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.5 square miles (27.2 km²), of which 10.1 square miles (26.2 km²) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²), or 3.64%, is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2020, there were 34,984 people, 12,000 households, and 8,000 families residing in the town. The population density was 3,465.7 people per square mile (1,338.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 40.1% White, 43.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 8.1% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 4.0% from other races, and 4.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.3% of the population.

Government

Randolph operates under a council-manager government system. The town is governed by a Town Council, which is responsible for legislative functions, and a Town Manager, who is responsible for executive functions.

Education

Randolph is served by the Randolph Public Schools system. The town has several elementary schools, one middle school, and Randolph High School.
