The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is an intergovernmental organization headquartered in Gaborone, Botswana. It aims to promote sustainable and equitable economic growth and socio-economic development through efficient, productive systems, deeper cooperation and integration, good governance, and durable peace and security among its 16 member states.
History
The SADC was established on 17 August 1992, evolving from the earlier Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC), which was formed in 1980. The transformation aimed to deepen regional integration and cooperation among the member states.
Objectives
SADC's primary objectives include:
- Promoting sustainable and equitable economic growth and socio-economic development.
- Enhancing the standard and quality of life of the people of Southern Africa.
- Supporting the socially disadvantaged through regional integration.
- Achieving complementarity between national and regional strategies and programs.
- Promoting and maximizing productive employment and utilization of resources.
