Black Alice (comics)
Black Alice is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by writer Gail Simone and artist Ron Adrian, the character first appeared in Birds of Prey #76 (January 2005). Black Alice is the alter ego of Lori Zechlin, a teenage girl with the ability to temporarily steal the magical powers of other superheroes and supervillains.
Publication history[edit]
Black Alice was introduced in Birds of Prey #76 as part of a storyline that explored the darker side of magic in the DC Universe. The character quickly gained popularity and has since appeared in various other DC Comics titles, including Secret Six and Shadowpact.
Fictional character biography[edit]
Lori Zechlin, a high school student, discovers her magical abilities after the death of her mother. Struggling with her newfound powers and the loss of her mother, Lori adopts the name Black Alice. Her ability to steal the magical powers of others makes her a unique and formidable character in the DC Universe.
Birds of Prey[edit]
In her debut appearance, Black Alice comes into contact with the Birds of Prey, a team of female superheroes led by Oracle. Initially, she is portrayed as a troubled teenager seeking revenge for her mother's death. Over time, she becomes an ally to the team, although her unpredictable nature and volatile powers make her a complex and sometimes dangerous ally.
Secret Six[edit]
Black Alice later joins the Secret Six, a group of antiheroes and villains. Her time with the team further explores her moral ambiguity and the challenges she faces in controlling her powers. Her relationships with other team members, particularly Catman and Deadshot, add depth to her character.
Shadowpact[edit]
Black Alice also becomes involved with the Shadowpact, a team of magical heroes. Her interactions with other magic users and her struggle to find her place in the world of magic are central themes during this period.
Powers and abilities[edit]
Black Alice possesses the unique ability to temporarily steal the magical powers of other beings. When she uses this ability, the original owner of the powers loses them until Black Alice relinquishes them or they are forcibly taken back. This power makes her one of the most versatile and unpredictable characters in the DC Universe.
Personality[edit]
Lori Zechlin is depicted as a troubled and often rebellious teenager. Her struggles with her powers, her mother's death, and her place in the world contribute to her complex personality. Despite her often abrasive exterior, she shows moments of vulnerability and a desire to belong.
In other media[edit]
As of now, Black Alice has not appeared in any DC Animated Universe or DC Extended Universe adaptations. However, her unique abilities and complex character make her a potential candidate for future adaptations.
