The DC Animated Universe (DCAU) is a shared universe centered on a group of animated television series and related spin-offs produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by DC Comics. The universe began with Batman: The Animated Series, which debuted in 1992, and has since expanded to include various other series, films, and media.
Television Series[edit]
The DCAU consists of several interconnected television series, each contributing to the overarching narrative of the universe:
- Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1995): The series that started the DCAU, known for its dark tone and complex characters.
- Superman: The Animated Series (1996–2000): Focuses on Superman and his adventures in Metropolis.
- The New Batman Adventures (1997–1999): A continuation of Batman: The Animated Series with updated animation and character designs.
- Batman Beyond (1999–2001): Set in a futuristic Gotham City, it follows a new Batman, Terry McGinnis.
- Static Shock (2000–2004): Follows Virgil Hawkins, a teenager with electromagnetic powers.
- The Zeta Project (2001–2002): A spin-off of Batman Beyond, focusing on a rogue synthoid.
- Justice League (TV series) (2001–2004): Brings together DC Comics' greatest heroes.
- Justice League Unlimited (2004–2006): Expands the Justice League roster to include a wide array of heroes.
Films[edit]
The DCAU also includes several animated films that are either direct adaptations of the series or original stories set within the universe:
- Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993): A theatrical release that expands on the Batman: The Animated Series storyline.
- Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1998): A direct-to-video film featuring Mr. Freeze.
- Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000): A film set in the Batman Beyond timeline.
- Justice League: The New Frontier (2008): An adaptation of the DC: The New Frontier comic series.
