BHP (formerly known as BHP Billiton) is an Australian multinational mining, metals, and petroleum company headquartered in Melbourne, Victoria. It is one of the world's largest resource companies and operates in over 25 countries.

History[edit]

BHP was founded in 1885 in the mining town of Broken Hill, New South Wales. The company was originally known as the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited. In 2001, BHP merged with the Anglo–Dutch mining company Billiton to form BHP Billiton. In 2017, the company rebranded itself as BHP.

Operations[edit]

BHP's operations are divided into four main business units:

Minerals Australia[edit]

This unit includes operations in iron ore, coal, nickel, and copper in Australia. The company's largest and most profitable operations are in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, where it operates several iron ore mines.

Minerals Americas[edit]

This unit includes operations in copper, silver, lead, zinc, and uranium in the Americas. Key assets include the Escondida mine in Chile, which is the world's largest copper mine.

Petroleum[edit]

BHP's petroleum business includes exploration, development, and production of oil and gas. The company has operations in the Gulf of Mexico, Australia, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Marketing and Supply[edit]

This unit is responsible for the global marketing and supply chain activities of BHP's products. It ensures the efficient and effective delivery of resources to customers around the world.

Environmental and Social Responsibility[edit]

BHP is committed to sustainable development and has implemented various initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. The company focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, managing water resources, and rehabilitating mining sites. BHP also invests in community development programs and supports various social initiatives in the regions where it operates.

Corporate Governance[edit]

BHP is governed by a board of directors, which is responsible for overseeing the company's management and operations. The board is composed of independent non-executive directors and executive directors. The company's corporate governance framework is designed to ensure transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct.
